Natick Practice is One of a Small Number in the State Specializing in State-of-the-Art System
When athletes suffer painful injuries, it’s natural for them to worry about strains, sprains, tears and breaks.
What they may not consider is the scar tissue or tightness that occur because of the injuries or overuse. Muscles, ligaments, tendons and areas between nerves may all be damaged, but that doesn’t necessarily relegate patients to surgery or long months of healing, according to Dr. Bradley Weiss, chiropractor, Performance Health Center, Natick.
Performance Heath Center is one of a small number of practices in Massachusetts that specialize in Active Release Techniques® (ART®), an advanced system of diagnosis and manual treatment for soft tissue disorders resulting from Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTD), Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI), postural strain, sports injuries and general wear and tear. ART works by releasing the tightness or scar tissue formation—whether they’re contributing to golfer’s or tennis elbow, or shin splints. The tissues can change because of:
- Acute injuries (pulls, tears, collisions, etc.)
- Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
- Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)
If nerves are trapped as this happens, patients may also feel tingling, numbness and weakness. Performance Health Center is one of only eight practices in the state with a license to address nerve entrapment using ART, too.
Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of the muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves to determine which tissues need to be treated. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements (with chiropractors choosing from about 500).
Many Performance Health Center patients feel better and are able to resume active lives after just a few ART sessions. Internationally known musicians who have been part of Performance Health Center’s Backstage Care practice have also achieved pain relief.
